Jeepney Stories

Today, the parent-teacher conference was held in our school. So basically, we only had classes from 7 to about 11 AM then we had to stay for a career orientation which will also be on our school. They’ve invited FEU-Silang this time, so all of us were present. After that, some of my classmates had to head over to LPU to take their entrance exams, we decided to supposedly come with them but unfortunately, we could no longer fit inside the car that they were gonna use.

We now decided to go to SM Dasma instead and have a little fun there, so we got ready and we had to commute to get there.

We arrived at the Jeepney-waiting shed place (I don’t know what it’s called), we went inside the Jeepney which was about to leave too. The conductor went inside and collected the fare. 

I was about to pay mine when my best friend Zarah, spoke up and said ‘Estudyante po.’. Zarah is very thrifty and she’ll exercise what she thinks is right, that’s something that all of us admire about her. Even if there’s only about 2 pesos difference she would still want to use the student discount since we were entitled to use that, so why not use it? and it’s not gonna hurt us or anything. I mean, every peso counts, right?

Then the conductor said, “Pakita kayo ng ID”.

Fortunately, we had our IDs with us, all 3 of us. Me, Lyka and Zarah.

We showed it to the conductor and he disregarded it.

Then he said, “Hindi lang yan ang batayan ko kung estudyante talaga”.

I got offended, I mean, we wouldn’t lie for 2 pesos.

We’re just simply exercising our right for that claim. So I said, “Kuya, may IDs naman po kami. May school year pa.”

Then He said, “Gusto mo ibalik ko sa inyo tong bayad niyo? Kung estudyante talaga kayo, may itatanong ako sa inyo. Ilang oras meron sa taong to?”.

I was like, wow! Do we look dumb?! I got offended of course. Plus, his tone was quite rude.

Then I computed, since there are 365 days in a year (I also considered the 1/4 day of each year) and there are 24 hours each day. I got a total answer of approximately 8760 hours or 8766 hours but that was just my primary guess. I don’t know for sure so I might be wrong and I would’ve just accepted that.

So I said, “since there’re 365 days in a year and 24 hours a day. Then it should be 365x24 plus the 1/4 day which is equivalent to 6 hours” but then the conductor spoke again.

He was like, “Jan kayo nagkamali. Di niyo sinama ang leap year. Pano niyo mabibilang? Kulang yan, walang leap year.”

That’s when I realized that this driver will definitely not give us that discount. We don’t have that Leap Year this year, because leap years or bissextile years only occurs every 4 years right? If they occur every four years then, the year that has a leap year should be a multiple of 4, therefore an even number.

2013 is not a multiple of four and is not even an even  number. It’s an odd number.

This conductor is just making us look like fools just so he won’t give us that discount. So I stopped, it just won’t work. I was like, let him have his 2 pesos. If that’ll satisfy him, even if it was wrong.

So the second Jeepney we got on, had a sort of a driver with a foul mouth. He was kinda rude to some of the passengers and kinda arrogant to other drivers. Plus, we were supposed to get off on the SM Dasma mall but instead he dropped us off on, I think Robinsons or somewhere there (I can barely remember), though he initially agreed to take us directly to the mall but little did he know that some of the passengers wasn’t supposed to be on the same route. So, we just let him drop us off there.

I mean, no big deal. We can walk, it’s fine with us but what’s not fine, was the way he treated some of the passengers. Kinda harsh, and we had to bear with that ‘harshness’ throughout the whole trip in his Jeepney.

The third one was the “walk of shame” for us. We were leaving SM Dasma and heading to Trece, Lyka asked the conductor. “Sa Trece po?”, then the driver nodded.

So we went inside, after we waited for a couple of minutes the Jeepney was full and when the conductor was collecting the fare, he said. “Saan to?”.

Lyka answered, “Trece po.”

he asked again, “saan?” with a sort of sarcastic tone.

“Sa Trece po.” Lyka said. 

Then he was like “NAKO! HINDI TO SA TRECE. Papunta tong *insert name of place that I don’t know here*! Hindi TRECE! NAKO NAMAN!”.

So I was like, WOAH? Rude much?

So we got off, feeling ashamed in front of everyone inside since that guy kinda raised his voice on us. Then when we got outside, the conductor was making this “tsk..tsk..tsk..” sound which annoyed me.

The fourth one didn’t have a rude conductor which made us quite happy but the Jeepney was kinda running slow so by the time we got there, there were no Jeepneys left and we had to find another place where we can find jeepneys to get home. Though, I personally thought that it was kinda okay but still a bummer. I mean we can’t do anything about the Jeep anyway. It was inevitable, so I was fine with it.

The last Jeepney we got on was hassle-free! :) Didn’t have any problem! YEHEY! FINALLY!

Overall, it was a tiring day with it’s ups and downs but it was all worth it since we had so much fun at the mall :)
